Description

Karekare, New Zealand This paragliding site, located just south of Piha on the West Coast, is not frequently used due to better alternatives available. The site offers coastal soaring and the possibility of cross-country (XC) flying, especially in summer when thermal conditions are favorable at nearby Whatipo Beach. Take-off: - Paragliders: Southern end of Karekare Beach. Walk to the southern end of the beach to the first bluff, then head upstream approximately 50 meters. Scramble up through trees and bushes until you reach a level area at about 100 meters above sea level (ASL). - Hang Gliders: Cliffs between Piha and Karekare. Landing: - On the beach. Weather and Wind Direction: - Suitable wind directions: North West, West, South West. - Note: The Karekare launch should not be used if the wind is strong and coming from further north than NW. Cautions: - There has been a near-fatality from rotor caused by the point at the north end of the beach. - The hang glider take-off is not suitable for paragliders due to rotor close to the edge. Airspace: - Located in controlled airspace (CTA/C) with a flight ceiling of 2,500 feet ASL. Restrictions: - Hang Gliding: Intermediate level + Cliff Launch. - Paragliding: PG2 certification + 60 hours of flight experience. Site Radio Channel: - Channel 20 - 476.900MHz. Access Conditions: - None. Site Monitor: - None. For more detailed information, visit [Cloudbase Paragliding Club](https://www.cloudbase.org.nz/site-guide/flying-site-karekare).
