Description

The launch site is situated at an elevation of 890-925 meters with a height difference of approximately 400 meters, making it a medium-easy site. This is a highly frequented main launch site for paragliders, especially being the closest spot to Vienna. It offers excellent soaring conditions and the possibility for cross-country flights, though not for extremely long distances. The area is versatile, extending even into the flatlands. The region is Maiersdorf, Austria. The site record here is 114.9 km. Another nearby site in the same region holds a record of 121.1 km. A third site in Austria has a record of 53.6 km. Access to the site is possible by car up to the GH Postl, followed by a short walk. For more information, visit: [Soaring Club Hohe Wand](http://www.soaringclub-hohewand.at) The ideal wind direction is southeast. Be cautious with south-southwest winds due to potential rotor turbulence. In light southwest winds, it is advisable to lay out your wing a bit lower to avoid the rotor. Strong thermals can sometimes make a northwest wind appear as southeast. When in doubt, it is better to skip the launch or consult with local pilots. There are two takeoff points: 1. The 'Oststartplatz' (east takeoff) is about a 15-minute walk from the Postl car park. It is suitable for northeast to southeast winds. This clearing in the woods can be turbulent if the wind comes over the trees, so exercise caution. 2. The 'Suedstart' (south takeoff) is used for southeast to south winds and is a cliff launch located a few hundred meters south of the Postl-Restaurant. This launch requires experience and skill. During east and south wind conditions, the area is excellent for soaring. In spring and summer, strong thermals are possible. On good weekends, especially in autumn and sometimes in winter, the launch site and the airspace above Hohe Wand can become crowded. The ridge of Hohe Wand spans 3 to 12 km, providing ample space for many pilots, but it is crucial to adhere to standard flying rules and show consideration for others.
