Hesselberg, located in Bavaria, Germany, is a popular paragliding site with a height of 653 meters and a height difference of 190 meters. This site is frequently used for soaring and thermal flights, and it offers good opportunities for cross-country flying. Top landing is common here.
To fly at Hesselberg, you need a restricted pilot's license (A-Schein). Guest pilots must obtain either a day or annual membership, which can be purchased at Gasthof Rötter in Gerolfingen. Since 2010, a sticker must be placed on your helmet at the issuing point without exceptions. The day membership costs €5, and the annual membership is €70.
Hesselberg is suitable for flights with both southern and northern winds, with a height difference of approximately 190 meters on both sides. The mountain and its take-off and landing sites are beginner-friendly, although a proficient reverse launch technique is recommended on the south side.
Due to its popularity as a recreational area, weekends see a high influx of bus travelers, families, hikers, model airplane enthusiasts, and children flying kites. Therefore, caution is advised during all take-offs and landings.
Guest pilots are welcome, but certain rules must be followed to ensure the site's long-term availability for everyone.
Take-off zones are marked in orange, prohibited zones for starting, landing, and flying are marked in gray, top and/or emergency landing zones are marked in red, and parking areas are marked with a "P". For southern winds, park at the information booth, and for northern winds, continue on the gravel path. Landing zones are marked in blue.
Hesselberg is an ideal site for both hang gliding and paragliding, but the sensitive ecological structure cannot handle large crowds.
