Description

Glover Park, located in St Heliers, Auckland, New Zealand, offers a unique paragliding experience with coastal soaring opportunities. This site is occasionally used and is best suited for flights in medium wind conditions, providing enough lift but staying below 25 km/h. The takeoff area is an open space on a cliff top at Glover Park. The takeoff height is approximately 160 feet above sea level. Due to the nature of the site, top landing is the only option, and it requires careful consideration of wind conditions and landing space. Landing is typically done on the beach to the left of the launch area. However, be aware that space is limited during high tide, and you should be considerate of beachgoers. There is no bottom landing available between mid and high tide, and top landing can be risky due to the presence of trees. For those looking to extend their flight, it is possible to transit eastward along the coast to Karaka Bay, where there are more landing options, though still limited by tidal movements. Alternatively, landings can be made at Ladies Bay or, after a long downwind glide, at St Heliers Bay. However, be mindful of airspace restrictions in these areas. The Auckland Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club oversees this site. Pilots should be aware of the Heli Vector lane on either side of the site and adhere to the regulations. The site is located within a VFR common frequency zone with a height restriction of 2,500 feet above sea level and is on the edge of the Auckland City Mandatory Broadcast Zone, where the height limit is 1,500 feet above sea level. The site radio channel is Channel 20 - 476.900MHz. Paragliders need to have a PG2 rating with at least 60 hours of flight experience. Special caution is advised as the site has a history of pilots landing in the tide, resulting in soaked gear and gliders. Always check the state of the tide and have an alternative landing option in case of changing wind conditions.
