Paragliding Musick Point

Musick Point is a seldom flown paragliding site but can be rewarding when the wind is from the ENE. On a good day, you can soar to Eastern Beach and back. The site is located 3 kilometers north of Eastern Beach, adjacent to the Howick Golf Course. Take-off is at the end of Musick Point Road, in the reserve beside the car park. Walk south from the car park approximately 40 meters to the old launch site, which has Pohutukawa trees directly behind and almost above you. While launching here is possible, it is not recommended. A better launch site is another 20 meters further along, just inside the golf course, where there are no trees behind to interfere. Landing is on the beach, but be aware that there is no bottom landing available two hours before and after high tide. There are stairs at the end of the point for easy access back up to the launch site. The top area behind the Pohutukawa trees is flat but has significant mechanical turbulence. The site is managed by the Auckland Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club. Site Radio Channel: Channel 20 - 476.900MHz Restrictions: - Hang Gliding: Intermediate level with 20+ hours and cliff launch experience. - Paragliding: PG2 level with 60+ hours. Cautions: - Take-off height is 80 feet above sea level. - Ensure you check the wind direction carefully, as trees on launch can redirect wind flow. The true wind direction should be taken from the wind lines on the water. Airspace: - The site is within a Controlled Traffic Area/Class C, with a height ceiling of 1,500 feet above sea level. - The peninsula is within the Mandatory Broadcast Zone NZB175.
