Description
At an altitude of 1897 meters with a height difference of 1390 meters, this site offers easy to medium difficulty paragliding. It's a popular spot for cross-country flights, leisure flights, soaring, and acrobatics. However, be aware of airspace restrictions, particularly the Klagenfurt TMA, which limits flying to a maximum of 2100 meters above sea level. Consult with local pilots to understand the permissible areas, as some airspaces may be temporarily open.
There are multiple take-off options within a 150-meter radius, with the most common directions being south and southwest. Westward take-offs are not recommended.
The Gerlitzen Alpe, located near Ossiacher See in Carinthia, Austria, is one of Europe's most renowned flying sites. It offers extensive tourist activities year-round and is close to the city of Villach. The landing zone is conveniently located near Ossiacher See, making it ideal for pilots with families.
The site is suitable for both XC and acro pilots. The current paragliding distance record is 169.32 km. The significant altitude difference and proximity to the lake provide excellent conditions for acro training. The area is also well-suited for flight safety training, with renowned acro pilot Xandi Meschuh conducting annual safety and acro training sessions here.
Airspace regulations are strict. In the Gerlitzen area, flying is allowed up to 1981 meters (FL65/6500ft MSL) or 300 meters above ground. Beyond this, the airspace is classified as D. The maximum altitude near the peak is 2200 meters, and with the TRA (Temporary Reserved Area) Gerlitzen open, flying up to 2896 meters (FL95/9500ft) is permitted. For more information on airspace clearance, contact the Feldkirchen airfield or check the ATIS-Klagenfurt frequency.
The Ossiacher See area is easily accessible via motorways (A10, A11, A2) and features a cable car to the top. The take-off site is large, smooth, and grassy, suitable for launches in all directions except north. The landing area is on the lakeside, next to the camping site, behind the treeline. Acro pilots are welcome to land on the field between the road and the lake but should avoid landing in the camping area or near the road.

The Gerlitzen Alpe offers perfect conditions for stress-free leisure flights, safety training, and cross-country flying under favorable conditions. The region's micro-climate often allows flying when other areas in Austria are not flyable. The dominant valley wind comes from the east, while west winds can indicate approaching foehn conditions, which are strong and turbulent.
