Description

The Chasseral, standing at 1,607 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in the Bernese Jura, located in the northwest of the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. Its former German name, Gestler, is still occasionally used in the region but is not widely known elsewhere in Switzerland. The Chasseral range stretches about 20 kilometers and is bordered by the Saint-Imier valley to the north, the Schüss (French: Suze/Taubenloch Gorge) to the east, Lake Biel to the south, and the Val de Ruz to the west. On the southern slope, at 800 meters above sea level, lies the extensive Montagne de Diesse plateau, home to several villages. To the northwest, the steep Combe Grède gorge extends towards the Saint-Imier valley and is now a designated nature reserve. The Chasseral is forested up to 1,400 meters, with alpine meadows above that elevation. A large relay station is situated at the summit. The peak is accessible by road from both Saint-Imier in the north and Nods on the Montagne de Diesse during the summer months, crossing the mountain range at the Col du Chasseral. Additionally, bus services operate from both sides in the summer, with the route between Nods and Chasseral running only on weekends. In good weather with clear visibility, the Chasseral offers a stunning panoramic view of the Alps, stretching from Säntis to Mont Blanc. Soaring on the north side is relatively straightforward, but caution is advised when top landing. It is recommended to land further down near the road. Flying through the 'Combe Grède' requires some flight experience and is not suitable for beginners. You can reach the launch site from the landing area using the shuttle service (bus operated by the Zorro flight school, run by Housi Bollinger). The bus departs on weekdays at 13:00 and on weekends from 10:00. For more information, visit the club's website: [Zorro Paragliding Club](http://zorro.ch)
