Description
Cerro de Itrabo, located in the region of Itrabo, Spain, offers a frequently used paragliding site with excellent thermal soaring conditions and some potential for cross-country flights. The takeoff altitude is 725 meters, and the landing is typically on the beach at Playa Velilla. The site is also popular among hang gliders due to its reliable thermals.
The takeoff area is straightforward and free of obstacles, but it is only accessible by a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The landing zone at Playa Velilla provides ample space for safe landings, although the nearby Playa Galera is no longer suitable due to park landscaping.
Access to the takeoff site involves a drive through Jete towards Otivar, with a turn-off before reaching Otivar that leads to Itrabo. From there, a field path along the ridge takes you to the takeoff point. Note that direct access from the beach to the takeoff site is not possible; you can drive to Loma del Gato and hike the rest of the way.
When flying, ensure you have sufficient thermals to reach the landing zone without detours. The flight can be concluded with a scenic glide over Almuñecar, where long beaches provide plenty of landing options.
