Description
Located in the Sierra de Gador region of Castala, Spain, this paragliding site offers a launch altitude of 1875 meters and a height difference of 1300 meters. The area is regularly used for thermal soaring and some cross-country flights. Despite the landscape being marred by plastic greenhouses, many pilots still find the site appealing due to its endless takeoff options facing south along the ridge.
The high plateau provides ample top-landing opportunities. However, it's crucial to scout your landing area beforehand. Strong thermals often keep you airborne longer than expected.
Difficulty levels vary:
- Lower launch site: very easy
- Higher launch site: easy
- Landing site: very easy
The distance between the launch sites and the landing area is relatively significant, but thermal conditions usually make this manageable.
To get there, from Almeria, take the highway towards El Ejido. From Almunecar, take the highway towards Almeria. Exit at Berja and follow signs to Castala. Before reaching Castala, head towards the large picnic area (Complejo Recreativo) and follow this road for approximately 20 km to the launch site. About one-third of the way, you'll find the new lower launch site, easily recognizable by a gate leading to a parking area. The road to the upper launch site becomes rougher, with many potholes, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for this part.
