Description

This coastal site offers a unique paragliding experience, especially during the winter months when the conditions are most favorable for cliff soaring. The launch site is situated 95 meters above sea level and is best suited for experienced pilots due to its challenging nature and lack of bottom landing options. Landing is only possible at Poppit Sands Beach, which is approximately 1 km from the launch site. There are no bottom landing options directly below the launch, and only emergency slope landings are possible. It's crucial not to confuse this site with the inland 'Cemmaes' spot. Additional details can be found on the [Fly Mid Wales website](https://www.flymidwales.org.uk/cms/node/10) and in their [site guide](https://www.flymidwales.org.uk/cms/sites/flymidwales.org.uk/files/SITES%20GUIDE2012R1.pdf). The site is open and the optimal wind direction is between 020-050 degrees. The site code is 7.063, and the grid reference is SN138493. Both hang gliders (HG) and paragliders (PG) with a CP rating can fly here. Pre-flight contact is not necessary, but be aware that this is a sensitive site with no formal take-off agreement. The site is known for providing scenic flights along the Teifi estuary in wave conditions, but it is not recommended for novice pilots. To access the site, from the south end of Cardigan Bridge, take the B4546 to Poppit Sands. Continue past the old car park and launch area to the car park at the very end of the road, where a £1 parking fee applies. From the car park, walk along the path past the farm buildings heading west. The path climbs and follows a fence; at the top of the short climb, a gate provides access to the take-off area. Be cautious of horses in the field. Do not launch unless the conditions are soarable. The wind must be straight on the hill and smooth; any roughness may indicate out-of-phase wave conditions. For paragliders, slope landing may be possible if descending, but this is not an option for hang gliders. There are no top or bottom landing options. Pilots must ridge soar for 1 km to land on the beach near the lifeboat station. Winter is an ideal time to fly here due to the cold laminar air flows that can form low-level waves, extending the lift band considerably.
