Description

Located in the Scottish Borders, Broughton Heights offers a variety of paragliding experiences. The site is known for its ease of access and suitability for both soaring and cross-country (XC) flights. The altitude at launch is 1800 feet, with a height difference of 950 feet from top to bottom. The site is particularly popular among hang glider pilots due to the possibility of 4WD access to the launch area. The main wind directions for this site are West and South West. The launch area is a large open bowl with a slight spine back ridge, providing ample flat areas on top. There are options for lower launches from the side of the hill and a tight North West bowl. Access to the site is via Lochurd farm on the A701. Parking is available in the North East corner of the farmyard, immediately before the field gate. It's important not to obstruct access and to check with the farmer for permission and ground conditions. A parking gratuity of £2.00 is payable directly to the farmer. For hang gliders, the launch involves walking or driving across the field heading South, through a gate, and following a steep track on the left up the hill to the top of the West-facing bowl. Paragliders follow a similar route but have the option to continue straight ahead for the lower North West face. The airspace above Broughton Heights is classified as Scottish TMA 'D' over 5500 feet. Pilots should ensure they have the latest airspace details on their navigation devices or an up-to-date chart. Top landing is generally straightforward with ample flat areas, but pilots should be cautious of the boundary fence at the rear of the launch. Bottom landing is possible in the roadside field on the North East side of Lochurd farm, but it's advisable to check with the farmer. Paragliders can also land in any non-crop fields around the farmhouse, avoiding livestock. The site has a history of being used for various club competitions and the Scottish (PG) Open. The current XC site record is 103 km to Alnwick, set in March 1999 by Martin Pacitti (HG).
