Description

Brauneck, Germany Altitude: 1535 m Height Difference: 800 m Difficulty: Medium This site is extremely popular and offers excellent cross-country (XC) flying opportunities. Access is facilitated by the Brauneck cable car. There are both ramp and natural launch sites available. The broad ridge of Brauneck provides optimal launch conditions facing south. The layout area can accommodate multiple gliders simultaneously. Winter, spring, and autumn often present very good conditions for southward launches. However, around midday, the valley wind shifts at the launch site, making it advisable to switch to the Garland launch site. Safety Notice: Hang gliders also launch southward here. Avoid simultaneous launches of hang gliders and paragliders to reduce collision risk. When flying east, maintain a safe distance from the lift cables of the material cableway leading to Brauneck-Haus. Best flown with a south wind. Avoid flying during Föhn conditions, but it is generally flyable even with a significant pressure gradient between the northern and southern Alps. Winter flying is also good. Launch Sites: - Summit (South-East, South-West): Easy, altitude 1556 m. Simple meadow launch directly at the summit, with ramps for hang gliders facing south and north. - Summit (North): Difficult, altitude 1550 m. Suitable for experienced pilots. Beware of lee turbulence with northwest winds and watch for launching hang gliders at the north ramp. The south launch is typically usable only until late morning, after which the valley wind from the north takes over. Thermals can then be found at 'Kotigen Stein/Koteck' or along the east-running ridge. For a north launch, thermals can often be found along the north ridge, but they can be turbulent at lower altitudes. Minimum departure altitude towards Benediktenwand or Jachenau is 1800 m (preferably 2000 m). When launching from the Garland basin, observe other pilots and choose your flight route accordingly. Strong east winds and thermals can create turbulent conditions. The complex terrain of Brauneck is suitable only for experienced pilots. Inexperienced pilots should seek guidance. East winds cause lee situations, and the Bavarian wind amplifies the valley wind system, causing turbulence in the landing area and the eastern cirque. The Garland launch site was a B-license launch site until May 2006 for good reason. The valley wind can make it challenging, and west winds can create lee rotors shortly after launch. Read the information board and observe the windsock at the summit (north ramp) before launching from Garland. Garland is now also approved for A-license pilots. There is also a north launch site for north wind conditions, but it is challenging. Landing approaches should be made with sufficient altitude over the tree lines surrounding the landing area, especially with strong valley winds. The windsock in the middle of the field and the visible windsock at the neighboring hang glider landing site indicate wind direction and strength well. Avoid low passes and flying too close to the hang glider landing area. Soaring Conditions: South of the landing area is 'Klein Lanzarote,' an extension of the Brauneck ridge where you can soar for hours in the valley wind. However, you must come from above as there is no launch site there. Alternatively, a 20-minute walk to the transmitter offers another launch option. The flight school occasionally takes students there. Soaring is excellent directly in front of the transmitter. Brauneck offers ideal launch conditions and often remains flyable when nearby mountains like Wallberg are not. However, the terrain is demanding for beginners or occasional pilots. For example, with south winds at the summit but north winds from the valley system, inexperienced pilots may find themselves in the lee of the mountain with strong sink, unable to reach the landing area. Excellent cross-country routes are available towards Benediktenwand, Kochel, or Aachensee. Generally, very good soaring conditions and a varied flying area. Pleasant launch sites and a large landing area close to the valley station make it perfect overall. Brauneck is suitable for north, east, and south winds. Multiple soaring spots are available. It is good for cross-country flying but challenging for beginners. During Föhn conditions, Brauneck often remains flyable due to its sheltered location.
