Description

The Bärensolspitz is located west above Näfels in the canton of Glarus. At the foot of the Bärensolspitz lies the Obersee, almost 1000 meters above sea level. From the shore of the Obersee (at 983 m above sea level), you will hike for nearly three hours to reach the launch site near the summit. Starting from the western end of the Obersee, follow the marked mountain path to Alp Staefeli, then continue over steep meadows directly to the ridge. Flight The area is dominated by updrafts. Conditions are not as easy as they might seem. Photos show how quickly overdevelopment can occur in the area, typically in the afternoon. After launching from the very steep meadow (see photo), you generally ascend. After a short flight to the left towards the rocks, you usually climb like in an elevator up to the clouds (of course, we fly away before reaching the clouds). Once you gain altitude over the Bärensolspitz, you can cross the valley towards Wägital or follow the ridge towards Galgenen. Alternatively, you can try to gain altitude over Wiggis and Rautispitz, provided they are not in the clouds. Gaining altitude should not be a problem; the view of Walensee, Lake Zurich, the Glarus region, the Obersee, and up to Säntis rewards the strenuous ascent. Difficulty A transport cable runs from above the parking lot to Alp Söli / Stäfeli. This should not be a problem as it runs through the forest. From the launch site, you can see another cable towards Brünnelistock. This is also visible but not marked. Strict regulations must be followed: CTR Mollis (134.825 MHz). Occasional military airfield occupancy, training jets. Delta-/paraglider landings are prohibited during military flight operations (weekdays, but not always) without explicit permission from TWR Mollis. For any uncertainties, the airfield manager Peter Kolesnik or deputy Hugo Vogt (079 712 04 40) can provide information. Check for flight information before flying (Notam, Kosif, http://www.flugplatz-mollis.ch). Approach the landing site at a maximum of 900 m above sea level. Never fly over the landing site towards the runway. Strictly adhere to the landing pattern (right-hand pattern with valley wind, left-hand pattern with mountain wind). Observe the driving ban for unauthorized vehicles on the road to the landing site. Park cars in the parking lot or along the road. Landing fee: Without a valid landing site card GKG, 2 Fr. to be deposited in the box at the hangar. It is best to consult local pilots (Gleitschirmklub Glarnerland) http://gkk.ch.
