Parapente Hirzli

Hirzli, located above Bilten and near Niederurnen, is a paragliding site that offers a rewarding experience, especially during Bise conditions. The main launch site is the WNW launch, not the one mentioned here. To reach the launch site, take the cable car from Niederurnen to Morgenholz. From there, follow the marked mountain path via Schwinfaerch to the launch site. The hike takes approximately 90 minutes. The launch area is a moderately steep to steep meadow in a large, northwest-facing basin near the summit. Typically, launches are done into the northeast Bise. The site is easily accessible from the Zurich-Chur highway, although the cable car does not go all the way to the summit. Plan for a 1.5 to 2-hour hike to reach the launch site. This area is a good alternative to the more easily accessible Galgenen. Soaring is best during northeast Bise conditions, and the site is generally suitable for flying with north winds. Thermals can be interesting around midday, allowing flights over the Niederurner Valley into the Glarnerland. Be cautious of the valley wind in Niederurnen, which can create a wind tunnel effect and rotors near the valley station. The valley wind can blow into the Glarnerland, but you might encounter strong winds in the opposite direction at the valley station. Do not fly over restricted zones. Check for information at the Morgenholz cable car station and on the summit. During hunting season, paragliding at Hirzli is prohibited. Outside of hunting season, flights are only allowed until 18:30. Check the information board at the lift for updates. The cable car from Niederurnen to Niederurnertäli operates year-round and covers 522 meters in elevation in eight minutes.
