Access to the launch site typically involves a 35-minute hike. Vehicle access is permitted only on weekends and requires a permit. Current regulations must be followed.
At the launch site, lay out your wing only on the designated area just before takeoff. Conduct a thorough pre-flight check due to the steep terrain, which makes aborting a takeoff difficult. Pay attention to the wind direction and the movement of wind indicators. Avoid launching if there is too much southern wind, as it can create dangerous rotors immediately after takeoff. The steep terrain can cause the wing to surge forward, so the takeoff run should be limited to two or three steps. If you can't lift off safely within this distance, abort the takeoff to avoid the tree line at the bottom of the launch area. This site is suitable for experienced pilots with good launch and landing techniques.
During the flight, the regional wind is significantly influenced by the Queichtal valley, requiring local knowledge to assess conditions safely. The wind strength is often amplified by the valley's funnel effect. Less experienced pilots and guests should aim for the official landing zone, as the direct flight to this area is long. If you don't gain altitude immediately after takeoff, head directly to the landing zone without wasting time searching for thermals. The emergency landing site, "Sportplatz," is challenging to reach, especially in strong ground winds, which can create turbulent conditions below 25 meters above ground. Avoid flying directly to the emergency landing site due to potential strong sink rates; instead, follow the ridge to the forehill. Be cautious of strong east winds and avoid flying behind the forehill, as the lack of updrafts can make returning to the landing zone difficult. In case of an approaching front, the wind direction can quickly shift from southeast to southwest, making it hard to reach the emergency landing site against the wind.
For landing, the official landing zone is a large field on a plateau, but expect turbulence and shifting winds on thermal days. The emergency landing site, "Sportplatz," is small and surrounded by tall trees, creating lee-side turbulence. Reduce altitude over the Turnerheim. Guests and less experienced pilots must use the official landing zone.
Pilots must have a B-license to fly here. The site has undergone significant changes, including the construction of a path through the previous launch area. After negotiations, a new launch site above the old one was established. The official landing zone is easily accessible, with a short walk to the parking area. Another landing option is the "Sportplatz" near the Turnerjugendheim, which also has nearby parking. Local pilots can provide valuable information about site-specific hazards.
Guest pilots must adhere to the club's flying rules and can only fly with club members. The height difference at this site is 180 meters. The hike to the launch site takes about 30 minutes through a forest path. The launch area is spacious, allowing for easy wing layout, and offers a beautiful view. Launching from the forest clearing is always possible with a headwind, indicated by wind socks placed at the front and back of the launch area.
