Description
Hohenberg is a regularly used launch site in the Palatinate region of Germany, known for good thermal soaring and occasional cross-country (XC) flights. The launch site, which is not yet visible on Google Earth, has been created in a clearing.
Region: Germany
Site record: 123.3 km
The Hohenberg is a thermally active mountain with excellent XC potential. It is one of the few northwest-facing launch sites in the area. With an elevation difference of over 300 meters, launching here is relatively easy by Palatinate standards.
To preserve the site, the following rules must be strictly observed:
Parking is only allowed in Queichhambach on official parking lots (e.g., at the cemetery) and not at Gut Hohenberg.
Driving on meadow or forest paths is strictly prohibited. Access is only on foot or by club bus (guests €4.00) with a valid driving permit.
Landing is only allowed on the official landing site, which must be inspected before the first landing. From the landing site, walk to the path at the edge of the meadows. Landing on any other meadows around the landing site is strictly prohibited.
Flying over horses must be done at a minimum of 200 meters above ground level (GND). Lower overflights (e.g., during landing) are not tolerated. Please be considerate of the horse owner, who also owns all surrounding meadows and kindly provides the official landing site.
Be particularly polite and courteous to all residents, hikers, riders, hunters/foresters, and landowners. The existence of this flying site is thanks to their friendly support.
Flying is only allowed after prior briefing.
Guests must adhere to the guest flying regulations. Before the first flight, guests must study the site description and rules and carry a printout with them.
Access: The ascent takes about 40 minutes on foot or can be done with the club bus. Driving on the meadows around the landing site and forest paths with private vehicles is prohibited. Parking is only allowed in official parking lots in Queichhambach. Parking at the cemetery is prohibited. Current driving permit regulations can be found at www.duddefliecher.de.
Start Notes: North wind, even strong north wind, is not always noticeable at the launch site. Wind indicators may suggest weak headwind. Therefore, consult the weather station shortly before launch and check the wind direction at the east edge (east of the tower).
Flight Notes: Do not fly over the horse paddocks.
Landing Notes: A right-hand landing pattern must be followed. The approach should be over the path. Depending on the wind direction, the landing pattern may need slight adjustments. The landing site is at the end of a slightly sloping meadow, surrounded by trees/bushes, and is often thermic. Expect challenging landing conditions such as turbulence and lift during the approach. Northeast of the landing site is a horse paddock. It is strictly forbidden to fly over the paddock. If the final approach is too long, use the smaller meadow to the left. Never land within the horse paddock as it endangers both the horses and yourself. Other meadows around the landing site are also off-limits.
Safety Notes: Hohenberg should only be flown with tree rescue equipment (safety/loop sling, whistle, cutter, rescue rope) accessible at all times during the flight. The site is also used by hang gliders, requiring increased attention and mutual consideration.
Liability Disclaimer: No warranty is given for the accuracy of the information provided in this site description. Changes are reserved. Each pilot uses this site at their own risk and independently decides on launch, flight path, and landing. The pilot must consider current conditions, their own flying skills, and the state of the site when making launch decisions.
Site Briefing: Only pilots with appropriate flying experience and skill level may launch here. All pilots must undergo a site briefing by a person designated by the SGC before their first flight. The pilot's skill level must be known to this person. The site briefing must first be conducted at the landing site due to the challenging landing conditions, and then continued at the launch site.

Challenging flying site with a very short ramp, suitable only for experienced pilots. The setup area is limited, so pilots must launch one after another in the same order. The elevation difference is around 240 meters. Guest pilots are welcome but should only launch with club members.
