Description
At an elevation of 2355 meters, this site is frequently used and offers a great launch point for long cross-country flights, especially optimal from late March to mid-April. The standard launch direction is southwest to south-southwest, though north to south-southeast launches are occasionally possible.
Located in the Sillian region of Austria, this site has a record flight distance of 110.5 km. The area has been a popular flying spot for a long time, offering numerous enticing routes. Positioned in the long-distance corridor between South Tyrol and Carinthia through the Puster and Drau valleys, Thurntaler serves as a convenient stopover. The Hochpustertal valley acts as a 'highway' heading east or west towards Lienz or Toblach, with the Lesachtal valley beckoning to the south.
Thermal conditions are favorable from midday onwards at all three launch sites. When valley winds blow from the east, soaring above Petersberg is possible. The large landing area near Sillian is easily reachable from all three launch points. From the Stalpen launch site, you can see the large landing meadow (marked by a windsock on a log cabin, near the cable car parking lot, which operates until Easter). It is advisable to inspect the landing area beforehand. Be cautious of valley winds, which can sometimes be quite strong. Typically, a right-hand turn is flown with east valley winds, and a left-hand turn with west valley winds.
A small landing fee is paid at the Blue Sky flight school, which helps maintain the flying site. The site is not suitable during north foehn or strong west winds. It is very popular in the spring. Afternoon thermals over Sillian can be excellent, allowing for high-altitude flights even with east valley winds.
Soaring conditions are possible over Petersberg with the right wind. Note that launching from Petersberg requires permission from the Blue Sky flight school, so please inquire there.
