Description
This site is an interesting soaring location, occasionally used and suitable only for experienced pilots. It faces east to north-east and is one of the few hills in the Thames Valley that accommodates this wind direction. The ridge is steep and tree-covered, with take-off from a small clearing. The view is stunning, overlooking Streatley, Goring, and the River Thames.
Be cautious, as the take-off is intimidating due to surrounding trees and a power line running parallel with the ridge just below the launch. Wind speed at take-off can be deceptively light. While it is possible to take off and land back at the launch point, it is very tricky. Top landing is possible at the south end of the ridge but is also challenging. Bottom landing is only safe at the south end of the ridge in a tight, scrubby area.
This site is strictly for very experienced pilots. If you get blown back, you will have to contend with trees and rotor. Always check with pilots already flying there before attempting to fly.
Access is from the National Trust Car Park for Lardon Chase. Cross the road and follow the footpath until you reach the trees at the top of the hill. A narrow footpath to the left leads to a clearing with benches, popular with dog walkers.
