The TschentenAlp in the Berner Oberland, Switzerland, is a well-known destination for paragliding enthusiasts. The site offers a challenging yet rewarding experience with a takeoff height of 860 meters. The northern launch is frequently used and provides excellent opportunities for cross-country flights.
The TschentenAlp is accessible year-round, except during cable car maintenance in May and November. The best time to start in spring and summer is between 10:00 and 11:30 AM. If you start too late, the thermals can be disrupted by valley winds. The area is susceptible to west winds and Föhn conditions.
Transport to the site is convenient via the Tschentenbahn cable car, followed by a 15-minute walk westward along the ridge. The northern launch site at Schwandfeldspitz is steep, and strong updrafts are common in the afternoons during spring and summer. Pilots must be proficient in reverse launching.
The TschentenAlp is renowned for its consistent thermals, even in winter, making it one of the top paragliding spots in Switzerland during the colder months. However, caution is advised due to the potential for strong winds.
Wildlife protection areas are in place, and from winter until mid-June, flights over Furggi are only permitted above 2200 meters. The western flank of the Lohner should be avoided during this period.
Landing cards for Adelboden cost CHF 5 per day or CHF 20 per year and are available at the Tschenten valley station. The main landing site, Oey, is located between the cemetery and the campsite. It has a slight downward slope towards the valley, which can make landings challenging in weak valley winds. The landing site at Boden varies between summer and winter.
