Description
The Schimbrig, located in the Entlebuch region near Schüpfheim in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland, offers a rewarding experience for both hiking and paragliding enthusiasts. The area is particularly known for its scenic beauty and diverse flying conditions.
To reach the take-off point, drive to Schimbrigbad at an elevation of 1420 meters. From there, it's a one-hour hike along a mountain path to the summit. The launch site is a large, moderately steep meadow at the western end of the ridge, situated at an altitude of 1780 meters. The coordinates for the launch site are 8.11105787, 46.93876379.
The launch window faces northwest and is considered easy to navigate. However, be cautious not to get driven into the valley, especially during strong Bise winds, as this can be dangerous.
The southeast flank of the mountain offers thermal flying opportunities almost year-round, even during transitional seasons and winter. For soaring, the northeastern side of the mountain is suitable when there is valley wind or a north wind.
In case of bad weather, you can continue hiking or opt for a glide flight to Schafmatt. On good weather days, fly from Schimbrig to Schafmatt. The day's goal is almost within glide range from there, with numerous landing options south of the village of Flühli. From Flühli, you can take a Postauto to Rischli and then find your way to Berghaus Salwideli.
