Description
The takeoff point is situated at an elevation of 1550 meters and is considered of medium difficulty. This spot is rarely used and is known for its unique characteristics. The hike to the takeoff point takes approximately 1.5 hours.
To reach the takeoff point, drive from Schüpfheim to Mittl. Farneren. From there, it's a relatively steep 20-minute hike through meadows. The takeoff area is located in a forest clearing. After launching, turn left immediately and fly over the treetops towards Schüpfheim. It's advisable not to linger too long at Farneren but to cross the valley quickly and soar up at Gsteig.
The takeoff window is oriented towards the North, Northeast, and Northwest. The area offers excellent valley wind soaring opportunities.
Farneren and Schafmatt can be accessed from Schüpfheim, LU. While there are various interesting takeoff options in this area, many are not actively used or officially recognized due to their somewhat challenging accessibility.
Farneren can be reached by car followed by a short 15-minute hike from Mittl. Farneren. The hike to Schafmatt is significantly longer, taking about 1.5 hours on foot.
The region provides excellent valley wind soaring conditions. At Schafmatt, there is a takeoff area on the summit ridge with good soaring possibilities in northwest wind conditions. Farneren offers the best soaring conditions with valley wind.
