Conditions Optimales
Description
Located in Talihina, USA, this paragliding site offers a launch altitude of 2,100 feet with a landing zone (LZ) at 897 feet, providing a vertical drop of 642 meters and a horizontal distance of 0.9 miles to the LZ. The site is known for its frequent use and excellent thermal soaring conditions, making it a good spot for cross-country (XC) flights. The site record for paragliding is 176.4 km, while for hang gliding, it is 44.9 km.
For paragliding pilots, the minimum required rating is P2 with flatland (FL) experience. Hang glider pilots need an H3 rating with flatland (FL) and restricted landing field (RLF) skills. The recommended wind limits for paragliders are a minimum of 0 mph, ideal at 7 mph, and a maximum of 15 mph, with gusts up to 5 mph. For hang gliders, the minimum wind is 5 mph, ideal at 10 mph, and a maximum of 20 mph, with gusts up to 5 mph. The ideal wind direction is 90 degrees, with acceptable directions ranging from 45 to 110 degrees.
The launch site is approximately 11 miles northeast of Talihina, OK. To reach the launch, head north on US Highway 271 past Talimena State Park, turn onto the Talimena Scenic Drive (Hwy 1), and continue for about 4 miles to the launch entrance on the north side of the highway. Follow the graveled road to the launch, ensuring the road remains clear by parking on either side. Overflow parking is not allowed outside the gated entrance, but pilots and visitors can park at nearby overlook areas.
Paragliding pilots should be cautious of large boulders near the launch slope and leave at trim speed to avoid ground obstacles. Intermediate pilots should be aware of the glide ratio to the LZ and fly directly to the LZ when 100 feet lower than the base of the launch-cut, especially if flying an EN rated A or B glider. Top landing is recommended only for P4 pilots. Traversing the ridge to the east should only be attempted if the pilot is higher than the launch, as there can be significant sink between the ridge and the LZ.
Hang glider pilots will find the launch site well-groomed and suitable for those with good slope launch skills. The site offers excellent thermal flying opportunities, particularly on post-frontal days. The 1.5-mile ridge facing east-northeast often provides spectacular soaring flights, especially towards the end of the day.
