Description

Buffalo Mountain, Talihina, USA Buffalo Mountain is a popular paragliding and hang gliding site known for its thermal soaring and cross-country potential. The site features three takeoff points, with the West Slope designated for hang gliders only, while the other two are suitable for both paragliders and hang gliders. The site is accessible via Buffalo Mountain Road, a 4-mile dirt road located just west of the Choctaw Indian Hospital grounds. Pilots should be aware of the terrain right off launch, which can cause a significant dip, sometimes even touching the ground. It is crucial to head for the edge of the rim out front before turning if winds are light. In stronger crosswinds, point your glider straight at the rim to avoid drifting. If you get below the rim, head for the landing zone (LZ) as soon as possible. Always monitor your ground speed when soaring, as drifting west can make it difficult to reach the LZ, especially with southeast winds. In emergencies, pilots can land in the open fields of Buffalo Valley, but be cautious of cattle. Top landing is possible for intermediate paragliders. Gain altitude and crab back behind the launch, staying in front of the dirt road to avoid rotor. Expect turbulence if winds exceed 10 mph at launch.
