Conditions Optimales
Description
The Orensberg in Frankweiler, Germany, offers a popular paragliding site with a height of 547 meters and a height difference of 300 meters. It is frequently used for soaring and offers good cross-country flying opportunities. The site is accessible primarily by foot, with a hike of approximately 45 minutes. There is a permit for the club bus to drive up to the Landauer Hütte, but this is only valid on weekends.
The launch area is a flat meadow in a forest clearing. Pilots should lay out their gliders just before takeoff and perform a thorough pre-flight check. Pay attention to the wind direction and ensure all wind indicators are moving uniformly. Be cautious of a path crossing the launch area, which can cause the glider to overshoot if crossed during the launch run. There are tree lines at the lower end of the launch site, and launching and flying in winds over 270° can be very critical. Northwest winds are not visible from the launch site, so check the flag on the Orensfelsen.
After takeoff, avoid flying directly to the landing site as this route can lead to lee-side turbulence and make it difficult to reach the landing area. In winds around 270°, fly to the landing site via the left side to avoid the lee caused by the ridge on the right. In southwest to west winds, fly right (north) after takeoff. When reaching the ridge running perpendicular to the Orensberg, fly slightly windward to the official landing site.
If experiencing strong sink, accelerate and try to fly over the ridge to avoid the lee effect from northern flows. The official landing site is a large meadow, making it easy to land, though conditions can be challenging on thermic days due to changing winds. The emergency landing site "Dernbacher Haus" is a small meadow and can be difficult to land due to lee or thermic conditions. Guests and newcomers must use the official landing site.
For safety, tree rescue equipment (ropes, saw, etc.) is available at the Dernbacher Haus. Helicopter landings are possible at the launch site and the Dernbacher Haus. The Orensberg is thermally active and often a starting point for cross-country flights. Do not fly in strong winds; the recommended wind strength is 2-3, with a maximum of 3 depending on thermal activity. Be aware of dangerous turbulence in northwest winds, which are not visible from the launch site, so check the flag on the Orensfelsen.
