Parapente Mt Lemmon Styler's, AZ

Mount Lemmon, located at an elevation of 8,500 feet, offers a challenging yet rewarding paragliding experience. The site is oriented to the west and features a shallow slope launch area. The coordinates for the launch site are 32.429610, -110.807378. The winds for hang gliding (HG) are typically between 5-10 mph, with a maximum gust of 5 mph over 3 seconds. For paragliding (PG), the winds are slightly calmer, ranging from 5-7 mph, with a maximum gust of 4 mph over 3 seconds. The optimal wind direction for launching is between 265°-280°, with caution advised for directions between 255°-290°. The setup area is located above the launch slope, and there are no tie-downs available. After launching from Styler's launch, pilots should fly straight out, aiming toward the ridge on the north (right) while maintaining sufficient terrain clearance. This path will take you above the Samaniego Ridge launch. Although this route is generally buoyant, you may need to fly further down the ridge to the notch, which is approximately a 3.5:1 glide from the launch point. This will position you in the canyon in front of the Samaniego Ridge launch. It's crucial to stay focused and fly over this ridge toward the house thermal on Samaniego Ridge. Be aware of the wave effect often present in the canyons directly in front of both Styler's and Samaniego Ridge launches. Adjust your speed accordingly, slowing down on the peaks and speeding up in the troughs. However, stopping to turn on what feels like a light thermal is usually a mistake. Mount Lemmon is a restricted site, and you must contact the Southern Arizona Hang Gliding Association (SAHGA) before flying. The site is only safely flyable in light northwest to west conditions, and flying without a guide can be dangerous.
