Description
Located in the South Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada, this paragliding site offers a variety of takeoff options and is suitable for both paragliding (PG) and hang gliding (HG). The site is known for its thermal soaring conditions and excellent cross-country potential.
The primary launch areas are situated at different elevations:
- Lower Launch: 3650 feet above sea level (asl), facing south and east.
- Upper Launch: 5810 feet asl, facing southeast, west, and southwest.
The main launch is at 5810 feet and is particularly good for early morning flights. The launch areas feature excellent grassy slopes, making it a great site for tandem flights as well.
Landing Zones (LZ):
- Pilots must set up on the west side of the Oliver Airport and land on the grass strip south of the airport. Planes set up on the east side and land on the runway.
- Lower South Launch: Land beside the corral at 2250 feet near the Kobau Lookout Road turnoff.
- Southwest Launch: Land in the scrub field at the Nighthawk border crossing turnoff.
Skill Level Requirements:
- Mild conditions: Novice to Intermediate
- Moderate conditions: Intermediate
- Strong conditions: Intermediate to Advanced
Regulations and Safety:
- No specific regulations, but insurance through HPAC or a local/home club is required.
- Pilots must be cautious of other aircraft and stay on the west side of the runway below 2000 feet above ground level (agl).
Vehicle Requirements:
- Rugged 2WD or 4WD vehicles are recommended for accessing the launch sites.
Radio Frequencies:
- 123.4 MHz for the White Lake Radio Telescope Observatory area (restricted for aircraft)
- 173.640 MHz or 1-800-461-911 for ambulance services
Launch Road Directions:
- Lower Launch: 7.7 km up Kobau Lookout Road, 11 km west of Osoyoos.
- Southeast Launch: Turn right at the Kobau Lookout parking lot/forestry campground, go straight past the lake, and turn right onto the circle road into the launch area.
- Southwest Launch: Turn right at the parking lot and turn left up to the tower.
Landing Directions:
- Oliver Airport: Set up on the west side and land on the grass strip south of the airport office.
- Alternate LZs: North end of Osoyoos Lake and the Nighthawk Station road turnoff.
