Description

Elevation: Launch at 3650' and 5810' ASL, Landing Zone at 910' ASL. Launch Directions: - Lower Launch: South, East - Upper Launch: Southeast, West, Southwest Location: Between Oliver and Osoyoos at the south end of the Okanagan Valley, South Central British Columbia. Site Type: Mountain, suitable for both paragliding (PG) and hang gliding (HG). Flying Type: Thermal with excellent cross-country potential. Launch Description: Excellent grassy slopes, ideal for tandem flights. The Southeast launch is particularly good for early morning flights, offering a glide similar to Golden. Landing Zone (LZ) Description: - HG & PG set up on the west side of the airport and land on the grass strip south of the airport. - Planes set up on the east and land on the runway. - Lower South Launch: Land beside the corral at 2250' near the Kobau Lookout Rd. turnoff. Be cautious of embankments causing turbulence in winds. - Southwest Launch: Land in the scrub field at the Nighthawk border crossing turnoff. Skill Level Requirements: - Mild conditions: Novice, Intermediate - Moderate conditions: Intermediate - Strong conditions: Intermediate, Advanced Regulations: None specified. Insurance required through HPAC, local club, or home club day use. Other Information: - HG & PG pilots must be vigilant for other aircraft. Below 2000' AGL, stay on the west side of the runway. Do not cross to the east side. - Southwind Hotel at the southwest end of the airport is a great meeting place and supporter. Vehicle Requirements: Rugged 2WD or 4WD recommended. Radio Frequency: 123.4 MHz (White Lake Radio Telescope Observatory Area is radio restricted for aircraft) & 173.640 MHz or 1-800-461-911 (Ambulance). Launch Road Name & Directions: - Lower Launch at 3650' (south facing): 7.7 km up Kobau Lookout Rd., 11 km west of Osoyoos on the road to Keremeos. - South 6000' Launch: 1 km hike up to the Lookout Tower, very rocky and not frequently used. - Southeast Launch at 5810': Main launch, great for morning flights. Turn right at the Kobau Lookout parking lot/forestry campground, go straight past the lake, and turn right onto the circle road into launch. Walk down to the most obvious launch off a little bluff. - Southwest Launch at 5900': Turn right at the parking lot and left up to the tower. - West Launch: 100 feet due west of the Tower above the road cut in sagebrush. - Southwest Launch: 2-minute hike down to the knob northwest of the Tower. Bomb out LZ for this launch is at the Nighthawk Station road turnoff. Landing Road Name and Directions: - Oliver Airport: HG & PG set up on the west side and land on the grass strip south of the airport office. Planes set up on the east and land on the runway. - Bomb out LZ directly below the Southeast launch (permission required). - Alternate LZs at the north end of Osoyoos Lake for the west launch and the Nighthawk Station road turnoff. Do not land in crops.
