Description

Mohawk Trail, located just north of Rt.2 about five miles east of North Adams, Massachusetts near the Western Summit, offers a medium-difficult paragliding experience. The site is more frequently used by hang gliders than paragliders. The launch is a slight slope leading to a cliff, requiring intermediate to advanced skills, especially in ground handling for paragliders. The official landing zone (LZ) requires an extremely long glide ratio of 13:1. There are non-official landing options below the takeoff, but these are not recommended due to the lack of permission to land or stash cars in the field below launch, known as Cirrus Field. The primary LZ is 'Amy's Field' behind McCann High School. Flyable wind directions are primarily NW, with possible directions ranging from WSW to NNW. The launch altitude is 2170 feet MSL, with a vertical drop to the LZ of 1400 feet. Access to the site is via a short 2WD dirt road to the radio towers. Winter access is possible if the road is not drifted in. There are no fees for using the site. When driving, take Rt2 in North Adams and look for the access road to the radio towers on the north side of Rt2 at the top of the hairpin turn section. Please note that the launch is on city property, and there are restrictions against camping, fires, littering, or cutting trees and bushes. Do not block access to the towers or gates, and park across Rt 2 from the tower access road if needed. The launch area is about 400 yards north, consisting of a grass and rock slope.
