Description

Maasvlakte (Coordinates: N51 58.878 E4 02.753) offers an artificial dune soaring experience with a height of up to 20 meters. Be cautious of the wind turbines in the area. The site is located at the entrance of the Rotterdam harbor and is suitable for north winds around 15 degrees. Despite the presence of windmills, there is still approximately 200 meters available for flying. The dune is covered with bushes, so there is only one suitable spot for takeoff. Be aware that large ships passing by can create turbulence, so avoid flying close to the bushes during these times. There is no fence at the site. Die Waterwegduin, with a maximum height of five meters, provides enough lift for enjoyable soaring. The takeoff spot is the bare section of the dune directly next to the parking area. It is quite narrow and bumpy. Locals often practice ground handling by walking up the dune and letting the wind lift them. Alternatively, you can lay out your wing at the top and launch either forward or backward. Ideal wind speeds, according to locals, are around 5-7 m/s (approximately 15-20 km/h). When larger cargo ships are passing between the breakwater and the beach, it might be advisable to land, as the rotors formed behind the ships can still have an impact despite the distance. For more information in Dutch, visit: [Soar Freaks](http://www.soarfreaks.nl) Directions: From the Rotterdam ring road, take the A15 towards Europoort. The A15 transitions into the N15. After reaching Europoort, continue on the N15 towards Maasvlakte, which is well signposted. The N15 then becomes Europaweg, which leads to the peninsula. To reach the north takeoff spot: After leaving the N15, follow Europaweg. After the long curve at the northwestern end of the island, the side road 'Stag Maasmond' leads left to the beach. For the west takeoff spot: Approximately 4 kilometers after leaving the N15, follow the signs for 'Strand Slufter'.
