Takeoff from below is occasionally used for local dam soaring in the Rotterdam Harbour region of the Netherlands. Coastal soaring is possible along the dikes and dunes surrounding the peninsula. While landing in the dunes is not prohibited, it is not recommended due to the difficulty of retrieving your wing from the vegetation.
Ideal wind speeds according to locals are around 5-7 m/s, which translates to approximately 15-20 km/h.
At the north launch site, it is advisable to land if large cargo ships are passing between the breakwater and the beach. Despite the distance, the rotors formed behind these ships can still have an impact.
The Slufter Beach, located on the southwestern shore of the peninsula, is a popular spot among soaring enthusiasts. Launching is presumably allowed everywhere along this beach. More information can be found in Dutch at [Soarfreaks](http://www.soarfreaks.nl).
To get there, take the A15 from the Rotterdam ring road towards Europoort. The A15 transitions into the N15. After reaching Europoort, continue on the N15 towards Maasvlakte, which is well signposted. The N15 then becomes the Europaweg, which provides access to the peninsula.
For the north launch site, follow the Europaweg after leaving the N15. After a long curve at the northwestern end of the island, the side road 'Stag Maasmond' leads left to the beach.
For the west launch site, approximately 4 kilometers after leaving the N15, follow the signs for 'Strand Slufter'.
