Description
This paragliding site in Bischofsheim, Germany, offers a launch point at an altitude of 889 meters with a height difference of 350 meters. It is a medium-difficult site, primarily used for southeast winds. Although it is occasionally used due to the short clearing start, it offers good cross-country potential.
The launch site on the southeast side was approved and first flown in the summer of 2009, thanks to the hard work of our members and the support of local authorities. The site allows for a height difference of around 250 meters, enabling pilots to catch the thermal lift on the southern flank of Kreuzberg. However, due to the challenging terrain, this site is recommended for experienced pilots only.
Access and Parking Option 1:
Park at the hiking parking lot at the northern exit of Sandberg. From there, carpool to Neustädter Haus, park the car, and follow the circular hiking trail No. 3 on foot. After about a 25-minute walk, you will reach the launch site following a steep ascent. Alternatively, very fit individuals can hike directly from the parking lot to the launch site in about an hour, following the signs to Neustädter Haus.
Access and Parking Option 2:
Drive to the central parking lot of Kloster Kreuzberg (parking fee €2). From there, walk past Kloster Kreuzberg towards the Bayerischer Rundfunk transmission mast (about a 25-minute walk).
Driving up to the launch site with a car is strictly prohibited.
The launch area is at the upper edge of the path. The clearing start is reserved for very skilled pilots due to the short takeoff distance (natural ramp), making a safe lift-off or aborted start impossible in zero wind conditions. The safest launch method is a controlled reverse launch in a southeast wind. Be particularly cautious of turbulence in the launch clearing.
Landing Zone:
Land on the meadow above the Steinkreuz near Ziegelhütte. From the hiking parking lot, follow the paved road towards Ziegelhütte. At the end of the paved road, walk another 100 meters, and the meadow will be visible on the right. Note that the meadow is slightly sloped and surrounded by tall trees, requiring a precise landing approach. Under favorable conditions and with sufficient altitude, landing is also possible near the hiking parking lot at the seating area at the upper exit of Sandberg (minimum glide ratio of 6 required).
Hazards:
The launch area is very short, making an aborted start impossible. Flights should only be conducted with winds from 130° to 180° and wind speeds between 5 and 25 km/h. The funnel effect of the launch clearing can distort wind direction and speed, causing strong turbulence.
If experiencing significant sink immediately after launch, there is a risk of not clearing the trees. Fly with the best glide and use the speed bar if necessary to quickly exit the sinking air.
