Klewenalp, located in the canton of Nidwalden, Switzerland, is a popular paragliding site with an elevation of 1594 meters. The site is regularly used for both recreational and cross-country flights, with the flying season running from May to October. Some enthusiasts consider it one of the best spots in Switzerland for acrobatic paragliding due to its accessibility, short walking distances, and stunning views over the lake.
The launch site is a flat meadow that abruptly drops off, making it suitable only for experienced pilots. The launch direction is northeast, and the site is accessible via a cable car from Beckenried. The coordinates for the launch site are 8.476128566265, 46.940234278747, and it takes about 2 minutes to reach the launch area from the cable car station.
Klewenalp is also a popular destination for safety training, with landings often taking place in the cold waters of Lake Lucerne. The area is easily accessible and suitable for shorter flights, although long-distance cross-country flights are less common.
For landing, avoid using the 'Boden' landing area near the community house unless in an emergency. Preferred landing spots include the area near Hotel Edelweiss or the 'Altes Schützenhaus'. An unofficial landing spot is the sports field in Beckenried, which is challenging due to obstacles. Another option is 'Acheri', a long meadow next to the Klewenbahn, suitable only when mowed and requiring a landing approach from the lake with ears pulled in.
A scenic mini cross-country route is from Klewenalp to Emmetten, then taking the cable car to Niederbauen and flying back to Beckenried. This route typically does not require significant thermal activity.
