Description
Gstaad, Switzerland, offers an exceptional paragliding experience with a launch site at 1926 meters above sea level. This site is highly frequented and known for its excellent cross-country (XC) flying potential. The region is particularly popular for thermal and distance flights, making it an ideal starting point for long paragliding adventures.
The main flying area is accessible via a gondola from Gstaad to Wispile. The launch site is a moderately steep meadow, located just a 5-minute walk from the gondola station. The site is best suited for flights in the morning due to favorable thermal conditions, but caution is advised when flying in the afternoon, especially with west winds after 13:00h.
Coordinates for the launch site are 7.29355807, 46.43689706, and it sits at an elevation of 1938 meters. The site offers three main take-off directions:
1. **East (1930 m)**: Ideal for morning flights. Located 100 meters south of the gondola station along a hiking trail. Afternoon flights can be tricky due to potential lee turbulence.
2. **West (1870 m)**: Suitable for flights after noon. This take-off can be challenging due to the terrain and occasional side winds.
3. **North (1850 m)**: Easiest take-off, located a few minutes north of the gondola station. Best used with 'Bise' (N/NE-wind).
The area is renowned for its beautiful flights over the Saanen and Simmen valleys, extending to the Bernese Alps or Col du Pillon. Morning thermals are strong, even in winter, but there is a risk of sinking air in the afternoons.
A flight over Gstaad, with its iconic Hotel Palace, is a must-do experience. The region's microclimate offers weak valley and mountain winds, providing numerous safe landing options.
