Description
Located in the upper part of the Canton of Obwalden, Lungern sits at 750 meters above sea level, nestled by the Lungernsee and at the foot of the Brünig Pass. This picturesque village is surrounded by steep, forested slopes and cliffs, making it an ideal spot for paragliding enthusiasts.
To reach the launch site, take the cable car and gondola from Lungern to Schoenbuel. From there, it's a 30-minute hike along a marked trail to the summit. The launch area is a moderately steep meadow at an altitude of 2200 meters, facing northwest.
The region offers excellent opportunities for cross-country flights, with launch options in all four cardinal directions. However, stronger westerly winds may require a short hike. The cable car and chairlift provide quick access to the mountain station, and the terrain usually allows for thermal flights even in winter. Be sure to observe no-fly zones.
The thermal conditions here are often strong, making it possible to extend your flight significantly. On a good day, you can even head towards Interlaken for an exhilarating cross-country experience.
During military operations, flights to the west are prohibited. Pay attention to the CTR Meiringen and LS-D6 (Axalp) danger zones, which are active from January 1 to May 31 and October 1 to December 31, Monday to Friday from 8:45 to 16:30. Report your flight path and altitude on 135.475 MHz when flying through these areas.
When flying towards Giswil or Sarnen, you'll enter the TMA 4 of Buochs (3950/1800m) and then the TMA 2 (3950/700m) if you continue towards Sarnersee.
Be cautious of multiple telephone cables at the smaller landing site near the lake. This area is shielded by trees and houses on the mountain side, and a telephone line runs diagonally across the field. The larger landing site is obstacle-free and suitable for strong mountain winds, but watch for rotor effects behind the trees.
The region is known for its Föhn winds. Strong thermals can make it possible to fly even in weak Föhn conditions, as long as the thermals lift the Föhn high enough.
For soaring conditions, good thermals allow for flights in all directions. You can head north towards Stanserhorn and Pilatus, south towards Hasliberg, and west towards Interlaken. In Bise conditions (north wind), you can comfortably soar in the north direction.
