Description
The takeoff site is located at an elevation of 1143 meters, with a height difference of 704 meters. The eastern takeoff is rarely used and requires a B-License.

Takeoff: There are two takeoff sites on top of the mountain, facing NNW-NNE and S-SW. The southern site is very large and easy to use with south winds, but it becomes more challenging with west winds. The northern site is smaller but still suitable for tandem flights. German pilots need a B-License to fly here due to the longer distance to the landing field. Both sites are also suitable for hang gliders.
The terrain in the Southern Black Forest is beautiful but demanding. The glide path to the landing field is long, with few emergency landing areas. Thermals significantly ease the flight. Pilots with an A-License need club membership and an introduction. Guests can fly with a B-License if an HCRB instructor is present. Be aware of airspace restrictions: Airspace D (not CTR) from Basel starts west of Hochblauen at 5500 ft MSL (as of 2008). Land only at the designated landing field; landing at the cemetery is prohibited. The landing field is challenging for hang gliders due to its location on a hilltop.

Eastern Takeoff: The takeoff area is quite flat and only suitable for very experienced paraglider pilots. Abort takeoff before the edge of the terrain, as the following steep slope is rocky. Significant east wind conditions often lead to challenging flying conditions in the Black Forest. Landing in Marzell is also only for very experienced pilots. Flights to Lipburg are generally not recommended due to the usual lee conditions.
Please observe the nature conservation restrictions at the takeoff site.
Club members with an A-License need at least two years of flying experience, 50 flights at Blauen, and a special briefing by a board member to use the eastern takeoff.
Blauen is a very demanding flying area that reacts to the slightest changes in wind direction and strength. Therefore, only pilots who meet the following conditions, in addition to legal requirements, are allowed to fly here:
- Unrestricted pilot's license (B-License) (exceptions for guest flights are detailed on the website)
- A paraglider with a glide ratio > 5.5
- Briefing by HCRB members
