Description
Elevation: 1143 meters, Height Difference: 704 meters
This site is highly frequented, especially popular for cross-country flights in spring, but also holds significant potential in summer.
Region: Germany. Nearby flights: 8708. Site record: 189.2 km. More information: [Link](https://hcrb.de/index.php/fluggebiet/#3startplatz)
Takeoff:
There are two takeoff sites on top of the mountain, facing NNW-NNE and S-SW. The south site is very large and easy to use with south winds, but more challenging with west winds. The north site is smaller but still suitable for tandem flights. German pilots need a B-License to fly here due to the longer distance to the landing field. Both sites are also suitable for hang gliders.
The terrain is beautiful but demanding, located in the southern Black Forest. The glide path to the landing field is long, with few emergency landing areas. Thermals significantly ease the flight. A-License pilots need club membership and an introduction. Guests can fly with a B-License if an HCRB instructor is present. Note the airspace: Basel's airspace D starts west of Hochblauen at 5500 ft MSL (as of 2008). Land only at the designated landing field; cemetery landings are prohibited. The landing field is challenging for hang gliders due to its location on a hilltop.
Southwest Takeoff:
When launching, the lower windsock on the road should point uphill. The launch area can be very thermic. In variable conditions, significant sink can occur in the launch area. The slope often does not support flights with southeast winds.
Pilots with limited terrain knowledge should orient themselves to the right towards the landing field after takeoff, as there are no landing options in the area in front of the launch site.
Blauen is a very demanding flying area that reacts to the slightest changes in wind direction and strength. Therefore, only pilots who meet the following requirements, in addition to legal prerequisites, are allowed to fly here:
- Unrestricted pilot license (B-License) (exceptions for guest flights are detailed on the website)
- A glider with a glide ratio > 5.5
- Introduction by HCRB members
