Description
Hirzli, located above Bilten and near Niederurnen, Switzerland, offers an impressive afternoon hike-and-fly experience with panoramic views. The main launch site faces west, but a light north wind can also be advantageous for ridge soaring towards the east. Cross-country flights are possible from this location.
The region is accessible via the Niederurnen-Morgenholz cable car, which takes you up to 1000 meters above sea level. From there, a 90-minute hike through partially wooded terrain leads to the summit at 1640 meters. The launch site is a steep meadow, oriented northwest, and is considered easy to launch from.
Be cautious of the valley wind funnel effect in Niederurnen and rotor turbulence near the cable car station. Avoid flying over restricted zones and check for updates at the Morgenholzbahn valley station. Note that there is no official landing site; use mowed meadows for landing.
Ideal wind conditions are from the northwest or north, with some northeast winds also being suitable. The area is particularly good for soaring in north-easterly conditions. Thermals can be enjoyed around midday, allowing flights over the Niederurner valley into the Glarnerland.
During hunting season, paragliding at Hirzli is prohibited. Outside of hunting season, flights are only permitted until 18:30. Always check the information board at the lift for the latest updates.
For transportation, the Niederurnen-Morgenholz cable car operates year-round, overcoming 522 meters in elevation in just eight minutes. For trips outside the official schedule, contact the cable car staff at +41 (0)55 610 10 83.
