Description
Mount Lemmon is primarily a hang gliding (HG) site and is not recommended for paragliding (PG) pilots. The launch site is situated at an elevation of 9,150 feet with a west-northwest orientation. The launch area is a steep slope located just outside the observatory fence, north of the launch coordinates (32.442905, -110.789016).
The ideal wind conditions for hang gliding here are 5-10 mph with a maximum gust of 5 mph over 3 seconds. The optimal wind direction for launching is between 295° and 315°, with a cautionary range of 285° to 320°.
After launching, pilots should stay left and cross the canyon at its narrowest point, maintaining altitude above the high terrain to reach the west side of the front ridge. From there, follow the high ground out to the main HG landing zone (LZ). It is crucial to avoid landing in the canyon due to its remote location and extremely rough roads, which require many hours and a very capable vehicle for retrieval.
Additionally, between February 1st and August 31st, pilots must stay at least 3,000 feet away from the reef of rocks formation located one mile north-northeast of the Observatory launch. This area is a breeding ground for Mexican Spotted Owls during this period.
