Description
The Fronalpstock in Inner Switzerland is a majestic mountain offering impressive views and deep valleys. It features relatively easy launch sites for almost every wind direction, though these quickly drop off into vertical cliffs. Reliable launch techniques are essential for a safe and enjoyable flight.
Access to the summit is convenient via the cable car from Morschach or the funicular from Schlattli, followed by another cable car to Fronalpstock. From the summit, it's a short walk to the launch site, which is a gentle slope.
Important: Never fly in Föhn conditions or even when there is a tendency for Föhn winds.
Flights along the cliffs and towards Urmiberg near Brunnen (inspect the landing site first), Morschach, or for experienced pilots, towards Rütli and southwards, offer stunning views. Despite the cliffs, Fronalpstock is not known for reliable thermals, though soaring is excellent in Bise conditions.
Difficulty: Medium. The launch areas are spacious, but good launch technique is crucial for a pleasant experience. Training is available here.
Caution: Weather and winds can change rapidly. Always keep an eye on the sailboats. Never fly in Föhn conditions, even with a tendency for Föhn winds. There is a 16kV power line near the launch and landing sites, which is hard to see in the evening. When flying back from Lake Lucerne towards Morschach, avoid flying too close to the forest due to an almost invisible power line running from the village to Fronalpstock.
