Description
The launch site at Urmiberg is situated at an altitude of 1108 meters and is easily accessible via a cable car from Brunnen. The launch area is a large, steep meadow right next to the cable car station, with a terraced section to facilitate safe take-offs even in snowy conditions. The site is uncomplicated and well-suited for both soaring and small cross-country flights.
The launch window is oriented towards the southeast, south, and southwest, making it ideal for weak wind conditions and winds from these directions. However, it is not suitable during Föhn winds. Be mindful of the flag on the rock to the left of the launch site, as it indicates the presence of updrafts (rotors) even during Bise winds.
The launch site is located just one minute below the cable car station. Due to its steep nature, it is important to pay attention to all wind indicators, as rotors are common. This site is frequently used by paragliding schools.
The Urmiberg offers a fantastic view over Lake Uri, Rigi, and Mythen. It provides launch opportunities for all wind directions and is an excellent spot for acro flying, with both the launch and landing sites conveniently located next to the cable car and directly above Lake Lucerne.
Thermals are often easy to utilize when flying south, while the north side offers good and simple soaring opportunities during Bise winds. The Urmiberg is situated along the north-south axis of the Reuss Valley, making it highly susceptible to Föhn winds.
