Description
Erlau is a popular paragliding site in the Odenwald region, specifically suited for east wind conditions. The launch area is situated in a clearing, and due to its layout, the wind should be steady for a successful takeoff. The site is known for its excellent soaring and cross-country (XC) potential.
The launch site is managed by the 1. Odenwälder Drachen- und Gleitschirmflieger-Club e.V. Due to high traffic, the number of pilots may be limited, and an orientation session is mandatory. The launch area slopes to the left in the direction of takeoff, making it somewhat challenging.
From October 1st to March 31st, only club members are allowed to fly here, with exceptions for members of the Bergsträßler and Lindenfelser clubs. Guest pilots must register online in advance and pay a daily fee. All pilots should check the current regulations before visiting.
The airspace situation is crucial to note, as Airspace C begins at 3500 feet MSL. The landing area in Erlau is sufficiently large and long, though it can be demanding for hang gliders. After flying, pilots often gather at the 'Holunderhof.'
Parking or stopping at the new landing site is strictly prohibited to avoid blocking the road. Only the club bus is allowed to access the new landing area. Pilots must wait for the bus or walk back to Erlau.
Due to recent issues with local farmers caused by poor landings and gatherings, the main landing area ("Dreieck") is currently closed. Alternative landing areas include a new site towards Rodenstein and the former "Heuballengrundstück." Pilots unsure of their ability to land in these areas should not take off.
