Bodesbeck Paragliding Site Site Status: This site is open for paragliding activities. Location Info: Grid Reference: NT 169104 OS Landranger: 73; Peebles, Galashiels, and Selkirk Latitude: 55.38060 Longitude: -3.31220 Wind: Direction: S, W - NW Best Direction: WNW Height: Above Sea Level: 2181ft (665m) Top to Bottom: 1640ft (500m) Road Access: Access is via a forestry track that leads up the south side of the hill. Approach along the Ettrick valley. Parking: Grid Reference: NT188092 Park at the end of the public road. Do not obstruct the track or gateway. Follow the forestry track up onto the top of Bught Hill, then follow quad bike tracks towards Bodesbeck Law. Take-Off: Grid Reference: NT169104 Take off from the top of the hill. Landing: Grid Reference: NT169104 (Top Landing) It is best to top land or slope land quite high up the hill. The hill is rather steep, and the scree slope is not ideal for climbing with a bundled glider. Bottom landing is possible but not recommended unless a car has been left in an appropriate place, as it involves a 30km walk back to the car via the roads. Flying: Excellent in a light west north-westerly wind. If the wind is very light, you may need to wait for the sun to heat the scree slopes below takeoff before thermals make flying possible. Hazards: Check NOTAM and CANP, especially if flying mid-week, as this area is used for low-flying exercises by military fast jets. Jets often fly along the valley at very low levels as they transition into the Yarrow Valley and may even be well below takeoff. Notes: Do not land in any fields with livestock or grass being grown for hay or silage. Park sensibly and do not block any forest tracks.
