Description
The take-off site is located at an elevation of 1240 meters above sea level and is accessible via a cable car from Luchsingen. From the cable car station, it takes about 20 minutes on foot to reach the launch area, passing through Bärensol and Unter Stafel. The launch site is a moderately steep meadow and should only be used when the vegetation is low. If you encounter anyone, please ask for permission before using the site.
The launch site is situated above the cable car station and is no longer marked. If you take the lower path (from the cable car station to the signpost, then right, and right again on a flat path), you will reach a farmhouse where you can ask for directions and permission to launch. The path then leads from the farmhouse to the sawmill, through the forest, past two barns, and up to the launch site near a wall and a row of trees.
The flying area is located above Luchsingen, on the route from Schwanden to Braunwald. The path to the lower launch site is relatively easy to find. For those with more time and energy, you can hike up to the upper launch site at Leuggelstock, which takes about 90-120 minutes.
This area is interesting for shorter cross-country flights within the Glarus Valley or even extending to Vorarlberg. Some triangle flights have also been completed here.
Flight:
The take-off is below a small wall and a row of trees. Since the area is not frequently flown, there is no windsock, and the launch site is not marked. The path to the launch site was shown by a local farmer, whom you can also ask for permission to launch.
Below the lower launch site, there is another row of trees and a telephone line. Launching is possible in mild Föhn conditions, although you will be lifted quickly.
Difficulty:
There are several lines present, but they should not pose significant problems. The Föhn wind is pushed upwards by strong thermals, but you should be aware of valley winds, which can make the descent turbulent.
Soaring Conditions:
In mild Föhn conditions, soaring is excellent. The area is more protected by strong thermals compared to places like Schrina at Walensee. The thermals push the Föhn upwards, allowing for comfortable soaring below. However, avoid climbing too high to stay out of the Föhn zone. Also, be aware that wind conditions can vary significantly lower in the valley.
