Conditions Optimales
Description
The Kohlbergspitze, located between Lermoos and Reutte near Bichlbach, Austria, offers a diverse range of launch sites and is regularly used for hike & fly activities. The elevation is approximately 2150 meters with a height difference of 1080 meters. Cross-country flights are possible from this site.
To reach the starting point, park at the tourism office in Bichlbach or find a spot in the village. From the tourism office, head northwest on the road until you see a sign for 'Kohlbergspitze' at the next intersection. Turn right into an underpass leading to the northern side of the valley. The trail begins at the base of the mountain and ascends steeply in many switchbacks. At around 1570 meters, you will pass a hidden hunting lodge. The path then flattens and continues eastward, crossing several avalanche paths. At approximately 1800 meters, you will reach a junction in a deeper ravine known as Haseltal. The Alpenrosenweg goes to the right, while the path to the summit of Kohlbergspitze goes left. The trail becomes steeper again, and soon you will see the large launch site directly at the summit. The total hiking time is about 2 to 2.5 hours.
The launch site faces southeast, with some flexibility to the east if there is a south wind. There are no other launch directions available. The site is ideal and not very demanding. The best time to visit is late autumn when the Bavarian wind has subsided, as it can make launches difficult from midday during the summer months.
There are plenty of agricultural fields around Bichlbach for landing, but be cautious of power lines. The official landing site is at the Grubigsteinbahn in Lermoos, which is reachable with modern gliders.
