Description
Lochranza - Torr, located in the Arran region of the UK, is a lesser-known paragliding site with a height of 332 meters. The site features a 325-meter hill with 70+ meter cliffs overlooking the Arran distillery at Lochranza. Occasionally, Golden Eagles nest in the cliffs and can be seen flying in the area.
Wind direction for this site is NW. To access the takeoff area, you can park either beside the distillery, which has a café/bar and is next to the landing area, or 900 meters southeast beside a stone-clad water storage tank. From the parking area, follow the fence line directly up the hill. When the fence ends, continue in the same direction until you reach the takeoff area, which is a wide and gently sloping grass/heather ramp just below the top of the hill. The 70-meter high cliff face should be to your left as you stand on the takeoff.
The landing area is visible on three sides of the distillery from the front edge of the ramp. Note that the distillery staff are very protective of the eagle nest site on the cliff face, even when it is not in use. Takeoff is about 200 meters from the nest site, and while gliders in the air do not disturb the eagles, people on the ground can. It is advisable to avoid using this takeoff if the eagles are nesting. Check locally during the nesting season for updates.
