Alpoglerberg, located above the panoramic road from Giswil to Sörenberg, is a lesser-known spot for paragliding but offers a unique experience for those who venture there. The area is more frequently used for skiing, especially in winter when a ski lift operates from Alpolgen to the mountain.
For paragliding, the site is ideal during Bise conditions, though you can also take off in other directions and utilize the thermals. The launch site is a beautiful, moderately steep meadow on the southwestern ridge side, easily accessible with a 30-minute hike from the pass height of the panoramic road. Coordinates for the launch site are 8.09709983, 46.81785374, at an elevation of 1840 meters.
From Sörenberg or Giswil, you can reach the pass height and then follow the mountain path along the NW ridge to the summit. The launch site on the northeastern ridge side is similarly accessible and offers a straightforward takeoff.
Flights typically start with valley winds from Giswil towards the northeast. Pilots often fly over Mörlialp directly towards Giswil or attempt to gain altitude at the Giswilerstöcke, a mountain range southeast of the launch site, to head towards Brienzer-Rothorn. Flights towards Brünig and Planplatten are also possible but more challenging.
Thermals begin to develop in the morning but are initially weak. The ridge facing the launch site receives sunlight from around midday, making it easier to gain altitude later in the day. However, the area is known for cloud formation and frequent storms, which can lead to turbulent conditions.
When flying towards Giswil, be cautious of the ski lift cables, which remain in place even during the summer.
