Description

This paragliding site in Andalusia, Spain, is highly recommended for its frequent use and excellent conditions for afternoon soaring and cross-country flights. However, be aware that the site is currently endangered by airspace and nature protection rules, particularly bird protection zones from December 1 to July 31, which must be observed. The site is known for its southwest to west orientation, making it a classic afternoon launch spot due to the later onset of thermals. It is the most frequently used launch site in Algodonales, especially suitable for longer cross-country flights with light regional southwest winds. Early starts are possible towards Olvera (east) or Ronda (southeast). The site is also excellent for soaring, although it can get crowded during peak season. Thermals rarely start before 3-4 PM unless the forecast is particularly good with light southwest winds. The site benefits from prolonged lift due to steep cliffs in front of the launch area, which generate soaring lift even with relatively little wind. The low sun angle also contributes to thermal activity. Before launching, always check the windsock on the ridge behind the launch site to ensure you have a headwind and are not launching into a rotor. Top landing is attempted by many but is not easy and should only be done when the site is not busy. Always consult with local pilots. Algodonales is a small town in Andalusia with several excellent flying sites for all wind directions. Flying is particularly interesting from mid-September to mid-April, although it can be windy in spring. While thermals are largely inactive in the rest of Europe, they are still active here, and all launch sites are great for soaring. The region enjoys a sunny winter climate, making it a popular destination for pilots seeking to escape the cold. Algodonales is located halfway between Málaga and Jerez de la Frontera, both of which are accessible from Germany. It takes about 1.5-2 hours by car to reach Algodonales from these cities. Within an hour's drive, there are eight launch sites to choose from. The main flying area is Mogote, the local mountain directly north of Algodonales, also known as Sierra de Lijar. It is the best starting point for cross-country flights in the region, along with Montellano. Other flying areas include El Bosque, Ronda la Vieja, Cañete la Real, and Teba. The region is generally influenced by the Azores High, with typical winds from the north to southeast. However, the proximity to the coast means that sea breezes often affect the area in the afternoon, turning the wind to west or northwest. This local wind variation can be surprising for inexperienced pilots, so it's essential to consult with locals for the best flying strategies. For weather forecasts, regional influences of the sea breeze are not captured in standard wind forecasts. It's more important to monitor upper-level winds using tools like the GFS Windgram for Algodonales. The Spanish weather service INM also provides simple weather forecasts for the area. Additionally, there is a webcam monitoring the Levante launch site. Keep in mind that Algodonales is located further west than Germany, so thermals start 1-2 hours later and reach their peak in the late afternoon. Flying too early increases the risk of sinking out. For accommodation and guidance, you can contact Gerhard (Gerardo) at Ganterfly or Lijar Sur. If traveling independently, a visit to JJ's Sports Bar is recommended. The bar is a popular meeting point for pilots, where you can check weather forecasts and connect with other pilots for ride-sharing to launch sites. Although Algodonales is known as an ideal winter flying site, it is flyable year-round. Summer can be very hot, but the dry heat is less taxing on the body. The strong heating of the ground during the day creates gentle, widespread thermals in the evening, known as "colchón." It is a unique experience to circle with large, peaceful vultures on this warm air mattress at sunset.
