Located in Andalusia, Spain, the Mogote launch site offers a unique paragliding experience. The takeoff point is at an altitude of 870 meters with a height difference of 390 meters. This site is frequently used for afternoon soaring and cross-country (XC) flights. However, be aware that the area is currently endangered by airspace and nature protection rules, particularly bird protection zones from December 1 to July 31, which must be observed.
The Mogote launch site is relatively small and short, making it safe for takeoff only with sufficient wind. From here, you can enjoy beautiful soaring flights along the entire northwest ridge of the Sierra de Lijar. The landing site, Poniente, is visible from the takeoff point. Thermal cross-country flights from this site typically head towards Ronda.
A marked hiking trail from the church in Algodonales leads directly to the northwest launch site, taking about an hour to ascend without gear.
Algodonales is a small town in Andalusia surrounded by excellent flying sites for all wind directions. The best flying season is from mid-September to mid-April, although it can be windy in spring. While much of Europe experiences a thermal pause, Algodonales often still offers good flying conditions. The sunny winter climate is particularly appealing.
Algodonales is located halfway between Málaga and Jerez de la Frontera, both of which are accessible from Germany via airlines like Tuifly, AirBerlin, and Germanwings. From these cities, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car to reach Algodonales.
Within an hour's drive, there are eight launch sites to choose from. The main flying area is Mogote, the local mountain directly north of Algodonales, also known as Sierra de Lijar. It is one of the best starting points for cross-country flights in the region. Other flying areas include El Bosque, Ronda la Vieja, Cañete la Real, and Teba.
The region is generally influenced by the Azores High, with typical winds from the north to southeast. However, coastal influences can cause the wind to shift to the west or northwest in the afternoon. The local topography causes the wind to vary, making it essential to consult with local pilots for the best flying conditions.

While Algodonales is known as an ideal winter flying site, it offers good flying conditions year-round. In summer, despite the heat, the dry climate makes it manageable. The phenomenon known as "colchón" provides gentle, widespread thermals in the evening, making it a unique experience to soar with the local vultures at sunset. Note that Ganterfly and JJ's may be closed in the summer due to a lack of visitors.
