Surf Whatipu

Whatipu - New Zealand Whatipu features a beach break with both right and left-hand waves, characterized by a sandy bottom. The waves are known for being hollow, fast, and powerful, making it suitable for experienced surfers. Access is straightforward via main roads to Huia, followed by a 15-30 minute walk to the beach. This surf spot works well at all tides, with optimal conditions during rising and falling tides. The ideal swell direction comes from the southwest and south, while the wind should ideally blow from the north or northwest. Despite its challenging nature, Whatipu sees few surfers during the week and on weekends, providing a relatively uncrowded experience. However, caution is advised due to potential dangers such as rips, undertow, and the presence of sharks.
