Conditions Optimales
Description
The Ettelsberg in Willingen, located in the Sauerland region of Germany, is a popular north-facing launch site, especially among local club pilots. The site offers convenient access via a cable car and excellent cross-country flying opportunities in thermally active north wind conditions. However, due to ongoing issues, guest pilots are currently not allowed to fly here.
The site is adjacent to a wildlife park, and despite explicit rules prohibiting overflying the park, some pilots have repeatedly ignored these regulations, causing tension with the park's owner. This has led to a temporary ban on guest pilots to prevent further incidents and potential permanent closure of the site.
Local club pilots from SauerlandAir who do not adhere to the rules may face a ban from all club sites. The Ettelsberg has a rich history, with early flights dating back to the 1970s using Rogallo gliders. Today, it remains one of the most versatile hang gliding and paragliding sites in the Sauerland.
For those flying here, it is crucial to respect the minimum overflight height of 50 meters above the cable car and 500 meters above the wildlife park. Top landings are strictly prohibited, and pilots must follow the instructions of the launch director.
Parking is available directly at the flight school at the Ettelsbergbahn valley station. Note that the Papillon FlyCard does not grant permission to fly at this site; it is only valid for flights at Papillon sites in Elpe, Wirmighausen, and Stormbruch.
